Building Villages

As I door knock through Hindmarsh Ward, I see lots of people who are isolated in their homes. While privacy is a vital element of security in the modern world, being cut off from friends and neighbours makes people vulnerable. During a disaster such as a heatwave (the biggest killer of ALL our natural hazards), the vulnerability of isolation is directly related to loss of life.

I want to build villages throughout our City, so that neighbours know each other and look out for each other and feel comfortable asking for help when things go wrong. Remember, when a disaster or health crisis strikes, it’s often a neighbour, who provides the initial response and support; AND they’ll, likely, be there for you during recovery.

Even before my decision to nominate for Council, my research and life experiences have taught me the importance of a strong local support network, and since moving to the area in 2014 I have been proactive in building a sense of connection in my own local area, including strengthening connections between neighbours, owners and renters. Organising and funding street parties, participating in existing community groups
